6 story-time questions that help children fall in love with reading
You do not need to be a teacher to make reading together special. A pause, a smile and one curious question can help a child feel that stories belong to them too.
1. What do you notice?
Before you begin, let your child explore the cover. Ask what they can see, how the character might feel and what they think could happen.
2. What might happen next?
Pause at a turning point. There is no wrong answer—this is a chance to practise imagination and confidence.
3. How is the character feeling?
Talking about a character’s face, words or choices helps children recognise feelings in themselves and others.
4. What would you do?
Invite your child into the adventure. They may choose a completely different solution, and that is part of the fun.
5. Did anything remind you of your life?
Connections make a story memorable: a family celebration, a new friendship, a wobbly first try or a proud moment.
6. Which part would you read again?
Let children return to the page they love most. Re-reading builds comfort, language and the joy of recognising a favourite moment.
The best question is the one that feels natural. Keep it playful, follow your child’s lead and enjoy the story together.
